Product DetailsEach can contains 15 ounces of delicious New England-style Clam Chowder, a New England tradition and staple. When the temperature drops outside and the snow starts to fly, New England families gather in their kitchens over comforting bowls of thick warm chowder, to catch up, share a story, or just to have a laugh. Our recipe has been fine-tuned over generations, passed down from mother to daughter, father to son. Our specialty seafood chowders are loaded with simple, easy to understand ingredients and chunks of fresh fish and seafood – the way any self-respecting chowder should be!
The New England variety of chowder, or "chowdah" as we say in Boston, contains no tomatoes. In fact, in 1939 a bill was introduced to a New England state legislature making it a statutory and culinary offense to add tomatoes to the traditional chowder recipe. The word "chowder" may come from the French "chaudiere", a large 3- legged iron cooking pot that was often used to make the soup. Or it may originate with the 16th century English word "jowter", which means fishmonger.
"A New England clam chowder, made as it should be, is a dish to preach about, to chant praises and sing hymns and burn incense before. To fight for. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought for--or on--clam chowder; part of it at least, I am sure it was. It is as American as the Stars and Stripes, as patriotic as the national Anthem. It is 'Yankee Doodle in a kettle.'" -- Joseph C. Lincoln (1870-1944, author of 47 books and plays about Cape Cod)
